Negligence action, in pro per. Plaintiff sprained his ankle and went to Kaiser to have it x-rayed. On his way out of the x-ray room, a nurse came traveling through a door a high rate of speed and slammed the door into the ankle that had just been x-rayed, causing excruciating pain above the original sprain that brought plaintiff to Kaiser in the first place, says the complaint. Plaintiff asked the Kaiser staff to re-ex-ray his injury. They refused, saying he was being discharged and there was nothing they could do for him, it is alleged. He immediately went to Alvarado Hospital and had another x-ray taken, which revealed an ankle fracture.

Medical malpractice action. Plaintiff Federico Covarrubias was under the care of Kaiser for an "ampullectomy" procedure that resulted in a perforation of his intestine, he says. Despite complaints of pain, vomiting, fever and other symptoms, he was released from the hospital less than seven hours after the surgery, according to the complaint. Continued calls to the defendants were ignored, he says, resulting in a life-threatening situation. Federico Covarrubias now suffers on-going disability and needs continuing care.

Horrific complaint detailing five separate visits to Kaiser physicians by a two-year-old girl who complainted of vaginal pain and constipation, then injuries to the face, then abdominal and ear pain, then abdominal swelling and lumps in her groin. Culminating the visits was a Kaiser "well child" examination, says the complaint, in which the child was certified as a "well child." A short time later, she was dead. The child had suffered, according to the complaint, "abrasion, lacerations and lesions to her neck, back, legs, vaginal and anal areas, as well as broken ribs and injuries to her skull." The child had "multiple fractures to her ribs, including fractures that had healed or were in the process of healing." The complaint says the clear signs of child abuse were never recognized or reported by Kaiser's staff even as they certified the child as "well."

Medical malpractice action. The defendant Kaiser Permanente gave the plaintiff Coumadin to thin the blood and Meloxicam for back pain which allegedly contradicted the use of Coumadin. Complaint over the death of a 16-year-old boy. He suffered from severe abdominal pains but was under-diagnosed, according to the complaint, as having a urinary tract infection. His appointment with a specialist was delayed for five months duirng which time he continued to suffer. He was labeled a "chronic complainer" by the staff. His condition continued to worsen with Kaiser doctors offering mental explanations. He later died in Kaiser's care, according to the complaint, while the staff trying to rescucitate him made jokes about the futility of their efforts.

The defendants performed arthroscopic surgery on the plaintiff's right knee to look for a meniscus tear but found none, and later performed a second arthroscopy and a synovectomy to remove a portion of the plaintiff's synovial membrane. The plaintiff developed bone on bone arthritis allegedly because the radical procedure caused the padding to be removed from her knee; she also has possible complex regional pain syndrome.

One reason why President Obama is driven to reforming the health care system in the United States is because of what happened to his grandmother. An insurer denied her coverage as she was dying from cancer.
It was a little different with me, but it was at bottom the same thing.
While Kaiser pretends to be a health care organization, it is in fact an insurer. And it behaves like one. Avoiding what the insurance industry calls "medical losses" -- i.e. medical bills for care to the sick and dying -- is what Kaiser is about.
